Shade staked a strong claim for a place in Britain’s Walker Cup team with a magnificent victory in the English amateur stroke-play championship at Hoylake today. He broke the day-old record of the Royal Liverpool links with his third round of 67. Against a field which included the British amateur champion. Michael Bonallack. Shade clinched an eight strokes victory with a final round of 71 for a 72 holes aggregate score of 284—one stroke outside the championship record. Shade gave one of the greatest displays by an amateur at Hoylake since the days of the great Bobby Jones. He had three twos in his third-round 67. which broke by one stroke the record established by Bonallack—who finished equal fifth at 299 Bonallack became the first amateur to break 70 in a championship match on the course yesterday. He scored 68 in his second round- It followed a 78 on Wednesay to make him second qualifier. His score will not be accepted as an official record, however, for officials say the course is 182 yards shorter than usual.
