CENTENARY OF TOWN

Visitors Go To Celebrations (IV Z Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 2. The modest settlement of Pauatahanui, near Upper Hutt, which will celebrate its centenary tomorrow. was visited by between 500 and 600 people today. They saw a vintage car rally and an exhibition of period furnishings in an old cottage. Some visitors came from as far away as Whangarei. Tomorrow’s celebrations will centre on "redcoats” escorting a buggy carrying the Queen’s mail to the Post Office as did soldiers when the settlement first began. Mr Sydney Boulton, the district’s oldest living former postmaster who attended today’s anniversary events, will be present at tomorrow’s tableau. His father was the first postmaster in the settlement. The Postmaster-General (Mr Kinsella) will formally open tomorrow’s proceedings which will feature a Post Office display of early telephonic equipment and postage stamps.
