TENNIS More Seeds Go At Wimbledon

(A Z-P.A -Reuier— Copyright) LONDON, June 30. Wimbledon bathed in temperatures upwards of 80 degrees yesterday when two seeds were beaten and four British players reached the last 16 of the men’s singles.

This was the best performance by British tennis players at the championships since before World War 11.

The perspiring crowd of 28000 surged around the courts to see Nicola Pietrangeli, the Italian number three seed, and 18-yesr-old Lesley Turner, of Australia, seeded four in the women's singles on her first appearance at Wimbledon, being beaten.

Pietrangeli was beaten. 2-6. 6-3. 6-4. 6-4, by a 21-year-old American student, C. Crawford, while another American, Miss M. Arnold, knocked out Miss Turner. 7-5. 6-4 Britain's four in the last 16 are R. Wilson. M. Sangster. W. and R. Taylor. of Sheffield. Knight's match with the American. W. Bond, was the focal point of toe day. It lasted three hours before Knigfit, playing his first competitive tennis since an attack of meningitis in South America early this year, followed by the death of his mother in a car crash in May won 12-10, 5-7, 2-6. 9-7, 6-0. By the end of their gruelling three hours both men were almost out on their feet, crossing over at a snail’s trace and hardly able to raise their rackets above their heads.
