Contract Let For mOOO A contract for a new reinforced concrete viaduct over the Waltohi villey. near Picton, has been let by the Railways Department for £46.000 The contract is subfect to the construction of foundations to be determined by drilling The total cost of the viaduct will be nearly £5O 000 as the department is making the earthwork approaches and laying the rails. The new viaduct will replace an old wooden structure which eannot carry the heavy engines to be used on the Cook strait rail-ferry service. It is hoped to have the viaduct finished before the se< ’ice begins in July. 1962. The viaduct, which is 436 ft long, has 11 abutments and piers. The method of laying the viaduct rails will be the same as that u*ed on the Ashley river bridge. Lon? wooden runners will be fixed to concrete beams and sleepers attached to them Rails will be la:'d on the sleepers as on a normal raih’ay line Tbe successful tenderers j are Messrs D and A. J Caith. ness who are at present building the Kowal river bridge.
