St. Albans Area Spending tParliementarp Reporter| WELLINGTON. June 29 The expenditure of' £120.000 to provide for extra telephone facilities io thewestern Mairehau and St Albans areas has been authorised by the Postmas’erGenera! <Mr Kinsella*, after representations had been made by Mr H J Walker [(Government, St. Albans). Advice received bv Mr Walker tonight indicates that lan expenditure of £3O 000 has been allocated for the [expansion and development lof the consumers’ duct and ■ cable reticulation system [serving the western Mairehau part of the Shirley exchange area.
Present feeder couples from the Shirley exchange serving the western Mairehau area are overfull, rnd there are 380 waiting applicants. Future growth is expected at the rate of 75 more subscribers annually
A further £90.000 has been authorised for the extension and development of telephone circuits from the St. Alban* excharge, and for allied improvements The main lines in this area are ful'y loaded as is the main cable from Christchurch Centra! to S’ Albans exchange. This pressure extends to the Fendalton and Paparua exchanges. There are 230 waiting apnli-. cants in S'. A’bans. and such is the demand that it is like’? to grow at the rate of 100 reoiTcsts annuailv.
The bulk of the work approved wi’l be carried out on the 1961-62 works programs
