Desert Road Closed IN Z Pres* AsKocmffon I N PLYMOUTH. June 29. Heavy snow fell throughout central and southern King Country today, causing the Desert road to be closed tonight. Fears were also held that the Taumarunui-Wanga-nul road might also be closed If snow continued to fall. Throughout Taranaki, heavy rain and hailstorms were experienced. Southern King Country was the worst sufferer, however. and snow caused disruptions to road traffic. The Desert road was closed in several places, and graders were used to clear the highway. Road Closed Persistent snowfalls throughout the day closed, the road early this evening, however, and up to a late hour snow continued to Jail. The Chateau, Tongariro, reported the heaviest snow for many years, and the National Park-Chateau road had to be cleared with a snowplough. Traffic was unable to get past the hotel along Bruce- road, and ski-ifig was possible right down to the Chateau grounds. Heavy snowfalls were also reported on the slopes of Mount Egmont. and the Daw son Falls Hostel was isolated when heavy snow, accompanied by hail, blocked the road, and broke telephone communications.
