PEN KNIFE OPERATION
Doctor Opens Bahv’s Chest
< N .Z.P.A • ttcuter—Cnpvrtph t > SYDNEY, June 29. A doctor today borrowed a cheap pen knife from a po’ iceman to open a drowned baby’s chest for emergency heart massage. The operation was successful. It was performed near a swimming pool in the back garden of a house in West Pennant Hill*, a Sydney suburb. Kneeling beside the swimming pool, the doctor used the inch and a quarter-long blade of the knife to open the chest cavity without anaesthetic. The child, Anthony Michael Green, aged two. is the son of Mr and Mrs B. Green. While on a family visit to his grand-parents. Mr and Mrs A. Defalsen, Anthony fell into th* swimming pool. The doctor said that after massage the heart beat resumed fain'ly and Anthony was transferred to an ambulance. Massage and oxygen were continued throughout a dash to Ryde District Hospital. Anthony's condition is fair. He is in an oxygen tent.
