HOSTEL AT CHEVIOT

Nassella Board Plans

The possibility of postponing building a hostel for grubbing workers at Cheviot was raised at yesterday’s meeting of the North Canterbury Nassella Tussock Board. A special committee has been looking for suitable sections in the Cheviot township and provision for building the hostel is in . this year’s estimates of the’ board.

“I would like to raise my small quiet voice and suggest we postpone building the hostel at Cheviot for 12 months." Mr L. R. C. Macfarlane said. “It would be very nice to have that £ll.OOO for actual destruction.

“We might find money very short by the end of the [year. and the money could be very useful.” he said. Mr A. A. Macfarlane said that £5OO for half an acre of rural land, in addition to surveying costs, seemed dear. The board was spending public money. “Whether this board has the right to use the Public Works Act or whether it could get the Cheviot County to do it. I don’t know,” Mr Macfarlane said. “That would cut it back to size, which is what wants doing.” The chairman (Mr T. G. Maxwell) said that the Public Works Act could be kept iin mind, but negotiations should go ahead in the mean- , time.
