£5OO Planting Grant Refused The new Hißnuxton High School has been refused a grant ot £5OO for landscaping. The Education Department advised the school board on Tuesday evening that the standard grant was £175 and thia could not be extended. The headmaster (Mr O. W. G. Lewis) said that, because of its peculiar position on beck land, the school needed massive planting to give a good effect His opinion had been supported by a landscape architect who had thought the department would agree. On the suggestion of Mrs F. O. Bennett, the school board will ask for a major planting plan to be prepared, even if only £175 can be spent at present. The school intends to hold planting ceremopfes on July 25 when parents will be invited. Steady progress was being made on all buildings, Mr Lewis said. The technical block was approaching completion and the physical education block was also well advanced. Finishing stages of the hall had been started. Mr Lewis suggested a complete investigation by the Education Department into the coal bunkering arrangements of new high schools. At present, he said, coal was dumped from a truck into a sunken square-sided bunker. There was a worm feed to the furnace but coal had to be shovelled into this feeder. Using half a ton a day this could be tedious. A sloping floor could slide coal directly on to the conveyer system. A time switch to ignite the furnace and set the water circulation system going would also save caretakers turning out at 6 a.m. They had to work till 8 p.m. or later. The board agreed to request an investigation.
