NEW CLUB FOR ELDERLY
! Avonside-Shirley Venture The second social club for elderly persons to be launoh- ' ed bv the Christchurch Aged i People's Welfare Council will 'be opened on July 4 at [A*alon Hall, Stanmore road. The other group promoted by the council is the one-year-old New Brighton Old Peoples’ Club. Although the council had done preliminary organisation. most of the later organisation would be done by the club's own committee, said the secretary of the council (Mrs M. E. Lawrie) yesterday. The centre for the new club, in the Rtohmond-Shir-ley-Avonside area, had been chosen because it was near many aged persons’ and pensioners' homes, said the convener of the club. Mrs H. L. Pruden. Outlining proposed plans. Mrs Pruden said all activities would be kept as simple as possible with community singing and light entertainment predominating. It was hoped to hold the club regularly on Tuesday afternoons, with free transport for members requiring it Refreshments would be provided at a small cost. The response to the council’s invitations had been most enthusiastic, said Mrs Pruden.
