SHOOTING OF PLKEKOS
Society Concerned At Sport “We are not happy about the pukeko," the Dominion president of the Forest and Bird Protection Society (Mr R. C. Nelson) told the annual meeting of the Canterbury branch in Christchurch on Thursday evening. Mr Nelson said the society was concerned about the bird being shot by sportsmen. It was not concerned with a farmer chasing the bird off his property or shooting it “In this district a shooter is allowed three pukekos a day. In some districts it is 15,” said Mr Nelson. Harrier hawks, being native birds, should not be destroyed in the way they were, said Mr Nelson. A northern acclimatisation society had run a competition for the greatest number of harrier hawks to be shot in one day. "Harrier hawks are good in some things," Mr Nelson said. “They eat up rats and mice and some insects and clean up the carrion which, otherwise. would attract blowflies. These would attack sheep. “This orgy of destruction is ill advised indeed.’ he said.
