Air Pollution
Sir.—l feel your article by Professor S. R. Siemon on smokeless fuel ahould not pass -without comment. First, the statement that "as electricity worked out at about the same cost as coal . . . smokeless fuel provided the cheaper type of heating ” In the report on "The Air Pollution in Christchurch.” Mr L. Wilkinson sttaes: “The average annual cost a dwelling for space heating is £8 for coal and £4 for electricity.” Which of the two is correct? Second, should the smokeless fuel be available the smoke problem could in time be alleviated, leaving pollution from sulphur dioxide gas. Air pollution from this gas iis insidious In moderate concentration this invisible gus is lethal, in minor concentration it has damaging effect on health, plants, and building materials Surely to remove the obvious in air pollution and leave the damaging gas is not real progress in cleaning up our air. —Yours, etc., BEWARE.
