Mr Shand Will Not Go (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. June 23. The Minister of Labour <Mr Shand) said tonight that he could not accept an invitation to address the Kawerau strikers. “Leading officials of the unions involved at Kawerau are in Wellington so there is no point in me going to Kawerau." Mr Shand said “But I would be happy to meet the union officials in Wellington at any mutually convenient time.” The chairman of the Kawerau strike committee, Mr R. W. McAneaney. yesterday invited Mr Shand to attend a meeting and “substantiate his allegations that we are acting in accordance with Communist agents.” Mr Shand yesterday accused Communists of trying to spread the Kawerau | strike.
