Death Duties
Sir.—I contradicted the incorrect estate duty figures “Queer Justice” gave—not the valuation figures. I do not agree with him that roll valuations are necessarily used for purposes of estate valuation. In a period of rising land values it is obvious that roll valuation figures must lag behind current values. Your correspondent gave as an example two similar farms being valued, for estate duty purposes, within a week, and, because a roll valuation had been done in between, the second farm was valued 50 per cent, higher and attracted, in has own words, “an increase of £6OOO (duty) in one week.” Not very flattering to the government department concerned. The comments of the Estate Duties Division would be welcomed. One could understand the second farm being valued at the new’ roll figure, but not the first, w’hich obviously had not been done for some years. However, his figures show clearly just how much the farmer has gained by capital appreciation.—Yours, etc., R.P. June 13, 1961.
