ITALIAN UNITY CENTENARY
Society Celebrates The centenary of the unification of Italy was celebrated recently by the Dante Alighieri Society, in Christ- ‘ church. A speech in Italian was delivered by the presi- : dent (Professor D. A. Kidd) , and congratulations were re- , ceived from the Italian . Foreign Minister (Dr. G , Pella) and from the Italian , Minister in Wellington (Dr. Guiseppe Capece). The secretary of the society (Mr B. Ballara) ex- , plained the meaning of the ; celebration and outlined the j events leading to the unification of Italy. He said that . the Italian people had a his- ; tory of art and religion dat- . zng from .the origin of i European civilisation and i that Italy was reborn in 1861 to give her people the i dignity of free citizenship. ; After a supper of a characteristic Italian dish, taglia- ! telle, usually served in . Italian families on special ■ occasions, and made by . members of the club, wine was served and the evening ended with a dance.
