President Migue' Ydfgeras, of Guatemala, said last night his Government had smashed a huge Communist plot to overthrow the country’s administration. He said civilians and military mem were involved, “evidently with the support of the Cuban Prime Minister, Fidel Castro, and the Mexican General Lazaro Cardenas."

Dr. Ydigoras’ statement followed disclosures that two men were killed and six passers-by were injured south of Guatemala on Saturday night in a gun battle between police and plotters, the Associated Press reported. The President said the Government did not think it necessary to take emergency measures because it had learned about the plot before, hand and remained in complete control of the situation He said the Government had a list of the conspirators. Some of the officers w-ho took part in the plot were men who participated in an uprising last November, and then fled to Honduras and Costa Rica. They returned secretly, he said.

“In any case, the plot would have failed because it did not have the backing either of the Army or of the people.” he said

None of the conspirators was on active military duty, he said.
