ANZAC DAY CHANGES
R.S.A. Meeting Remits (NZ Press Association} WELLINGTON, June 13. Two remits tabled at the annual meeting of toe Dornin-; ion Council of the New Zealand Returned Services’ Asso-! ciation today suggested a referendum among members on] the observance of Anzac Day ] The Upper Hutt association asks headquarters to conduct a referendum among financial members to discover their feelings “on the solemn observance of Anzac Day being confined to the forenoon" and Auckland also suggests that consideration be given to a referendum.
A Taumarunui remit suggested that Anzac Day be retained in its present form, but that at the conclusion of ceremonies the rest of the day be devoted to organised youth activities under R.S.A. direction. A Putaruru remit suggests that the observance of Anzac Day take the form, as in New South Wales, of “morning sacred, afternoon open.” A further remit, by Wellington, proposed that the observance in each community by “such as would meet the wishes of that community.” These remits will be discussed by a sub-committee and recommendations will be debated by the council.
