Benmore Shops Allowed Two Late Nights

DVNEDN, June 12. Because of the exceptional conditions at Benmore, the Shops and Offices Authority 'Mr H. J. Thompson, S.M.>, granted eight applications by Benmore retailers. Counsel appearing for the applicants in each case mentioned that the retailers wished to make additional facilities available for shift workers and others employed on the project In additaon to Late closing on Friday nights, the retailers were granted extension to trade until 9 pan. on Thursdays. Each application was supported by the Ministry of Works. There are few other areas in New Zealand where complete blocks of shops are open on two nights of the week. Applications to extend trading to • p.m. on Thursday were granted as follows: Tom’s Grocery, Ltd.. R. McL. Miller (stationer), Waitaki Electric Power Board, R. M. Willmott, Ltd. (mercer), L. G. Wood, Ltd. (draper), Rolton’s Footwear. Ltd, J. L. Owens (mixed business). In addition to an extension to 9 pan. on Thursday, Benmore Hardware and Building Supplies. Ltd., was ©anted an authority to open from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, providing it sold only building supplies. The firm’s application for extensions to trade on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday between 7
p.m. and 8 p.m. was not allowed. The application of North Otago Farmers' Co-op. Association. Ltd., for extension in its hours of trade was opposed and the application was refused. Hey's, Ltd. withdrew its application for extension to 9 pun. on Thursday.
