SOCCER Finney Names Haydon As Impressive Player
; The young Bay*’ High : School and Canterbury player, T. Haydon, has been , named by the player-manager 'of the touring English team, IT. Finney, as one of the three 'young players in the Dominion who have impressed him ’ most on the current tour. The Mother two are P. Whiting I (Wellington), and J. Kamp | (Auckland).
In an article specially written For a Wellington newspaper, Finney comments on the ability of Haydon as shown in the match in which the English team beat Canterbury, 11-1, two week* ago in Christchurch, Wlxitsng, s goal-keeper, and Kemp, a centre-half, both played for New Zealand against the tourists in the two test matches played. Haydon, aged 18, Is the son of the coach of the Canterbury representative side. Mr F. Haydon. Mr Haydon I played as a full-back tor Western and Canterbury, and earlier played first division football m England and South Africa, and toured Holland with a London amateur team. Middlesex Wanderers. He also played for The Rest against Englund. Tire younger Hayden was official mascot to Wealdstone,
a London amateur club, for which his father played for 17 seasons. In his early years he had correct coaching from his father and this, combined with a natural talent for the game, ensured his later progress. Since coming to New Zealand in 1954 he has repre-
temed Canterbury in the under-12, under-14 and under--16 teams, and also in the
Junior Nation*] Cup. This it bis second season in the senior representative side. Haydon has represented Canterbury at inside left. He is a goal-ecoring forward, with a hard shot with each foot. He must have been close to selection in the South Island team this year, and he undoubtedly ba* a very bright future.
