Fast Scoring Subba Row Hits Century
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) BIRMINGHAM, June 13. R. Subba Row completed a fine century this morning in a fast-scoring second wicket partnership with E. R. Dexter in England’s second innings in the first cricket test against Australia.
There were only about 1000 people in the ground when Subba Row prepared to take strike to A. K. Davidson. The first over was uneventful. It contained only four balls. completing Davidson's interrupted over of yesterday, when rain stopped play. Subba Row twice drove firmly between mid-off and cover, where N. O'Neill was right behind the ball.
K. Mackay opened from the pavilion end and Dexter took two successive fours from him. He cracked a full toss past Harvey at silly mid-off and then swung the next ball high over four fieldsmen crouched round his bat on the leg side. There was no immediate sign that the pitch was “doing anything,” and Subba Row easily took two off the third ball of Davidson's next over with an on-drive. Mackay's second over did not cause any trouble and after Dexter had cut a single. Subba Row glanced him for two.
Davidson, At this stage, was not getting anything out of the pitch, although the list ball of his next over came in sharply and Subba Row jabbed hard down on it to keep it out. and then looked hard at the pitch. After two overs for 11 runs. Mackay came off and R. Benaud took over. His first over cost nine runs. Dexter off-drove the first ball for four and then square-cut the second for another four before taking a single down to the long-on boundary off the last ball. Dexter had scored 20 in 20 minutes this morning and England was now 130 for one. Davidson pitched one short in his next over, but it rose almost lazily chert-high and
Subba Row watched it go harmlessly by. Runs were coming quickly and effortlessly. Subba Row swept Benaud to the fine leg boundary and then Dexter square-cut Davidson with tremendous force for his fifth four before off-driving him three balls later for another. The 50 partnership was up in 48 minutes and Benaud. having terted the pitch in his two overs, which cost 12 runs, gave way to Mackay. The crowd was building up slowly In the sunshine and there were about 3000 present when Subba Row turned Mackay to deep square leg for three, giving C. C. McDonald a long chase, to bring up England's 150 in 179 minutes. tile last 50 in 38 minutes. The first half-hour this morning had brought 44 runs with Dexter getting 29 of them. Davidson came off and Benaud came back at his end, bowling a maiden to Subba Row. Dexter was in trouble tor the first time this morning when Mackay bowled a good ul maiden to him, then Benaud S tied him down in another. ’ Subba Row. meanwhile, was picking up runs steadily, and he got Mackay away tor two just behind square leg as he moved through the 90's.
