Cow Nuisance?
Sir,—From beyond, along Hay street, down Linwood avenue, into Tilford street, through a council paddock out into Smith street and along into another council paddock, a herd of cows has been driven, night and morning, for over a fortnight now. The smell, mess, and flies associated with this twicedaily drive remains. We mow and tidy up our street frontages and receive smelly cowflaps in return. All properties on this route are not fenced and a straying cow or two with dog at heel can soon cut up a lawn or garden Town cowfarming is out. People in the Waimairi County objected to just these messy tactics and we in the avenue area also object to this daily pollution of street and footpaths. As a ratepayer I would like to know when the council is going to stop this nuisance.—Yours, etc.. RATEPAYER. February 26, 1961. [The Acting Town Clerk (Mr C. S. Bowie) said: “There is no simple solution to this problem. The total exclusion of stock from city streets is not practicable. Section 111 of by-law No. 14 places certain limitations on the driving of stock strough city streets and particularly prohibits this between the hours of 8.30 a.m. and 5.30 n.m. from April to October The council has plans for the reading and development of council land in the Smith street area for housing purposes which will lead to the area.”]
