Two Heaviest For Three Years

The frosts on Saturday and Sunday mornings were the heaviest recorded at Harewood for three years. On Saturday a frost of 13.6 degrees was recorded at Harewood, and of 12 6 degrees at the Botanic Gardens. It was the hardest frost for June recorded at the airport since the weather office was established there about 15 years ago. Yesterday the reading at Harewood was 12.4 degrees and at the Botanic Gardens 11.5 degrees It was not expected that the frost this morning would be as heavy as the previous two mornings, although the reading at Harewood at in pm. yesterday was 6.5 degrees. On July 2. 1958, a frost of 14 8 degrees was recorded a* Harewood. However, this was considerably less than the unofficial New Zealand record—39 degrees, recorded in the Ashburton Gorge in Julv. 1958. The heaviest frost recorded in New Zealand on Saturday w r as of 22 degrees at Alexandra. in Central Otago Most North Island areas exnerienced some frosts during the week-end. but they were not as severe as in the South Island. The frosts in Canterbury rural areas on Saturday were similar to those recorded in Christchurch The heaviest was of 16 degrees at Lake Coleridge.
