GEOLOGICAL MAPS

Four-Mile Series Appearing A series of geological maps, covering the whole of New Zealand at a scale of 1:250.000 (about four miles to the inch) should be completed about 1964. Seven of the series have already been published, and the rest are in various stages of preparation by the Geological Survey of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. The only two South Island maps so far published are Nos. 21 iChristchurch) and 27 (Fiord). No. 13 (Golden Bay), however, is being printed and should appear by the end of the year. Of the others, Nos. 22 (Wakatipu) and 23 (Oamaru) are being drawn. Nos. 14 (Marlborough Sounds), 16 (Kaikoura). 18 (Hurunui). and 24 (Invercargill) are at She editing stage. Nos. 15 (Buller), 17 (Hokitika). 19 <Haast>, and 25 (Dunedin) are being compiled, and the work for No. 20 (Mount Cook) has just been started. The field work for the Mount Cook map, which extends from coast to coast across the waist of the South Island, will be the major occupation of the Christchurch staff of the Geological Survey next summer. In preparation also is a major work to be called “The Geology of New Zealand.” due to be published soon after the map series. It is intended to be read in conjunction with the maps. A certain amount of written information is supplied with each map. Most of the maps include, too. one or more geological sections of the map area. Mines, oil seeps, mineral springs, and occurrences of economic minerals also appear. Except in the extreme south, the cut-up of the maps is along the same boundaries as the Land and Survey Department's new series on the same scale.
