NEW SURVEY SHIP

Oceanographic Research (Special Crepdt N.ZJ’jA.) LONDON, June 9 A new research ship is to be buiK for the National Institute of Oceanography to replace the 32-year-old Discovery 11. It will be constructed m Aberdeen at a coat of £BOO,OOO. The Civil Lord of the Admiralty. Mr C. Orr-Ewlng. said in the House of Commons that the ship is expected to take 15 months to build and to have a life time of 20-25 years. The contract price included much specialised equipment. There would be 3000 square feet of laboratory space provided under cover. The ship will be of advanced design with a length of 260 ft and a beam of 46ft. Special features include a bow thrust propeller and an open vertical well through the ship, just forward of the bridge, so that instruments can be lowered directly into the sea from a laboratory on the upper deck. The ship will have a range of 15,000 miles. The naval correspondent of “The Times" suggests that the ship’s first assignment Is likely to be in connexion with a big Indian Ocean survey in 1963.
