TARANAKI OIL
‘Would Use New Refinery’ (N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, June 8 Oil from Thranaki would be refined at New Zealand’s new £20.000,000 refinery at Whangarei provided it was found in commercial quantity and was of good quality, the chairman of directors of Shell-8.P.-Todd Oil Services. Ltd. (Mr J. B. Price) said at New Plymouth today. Because of the high cost of installing pipe-lines from Taranaki to Whangarei. Taranaki oil would be taken by sea in tankers, he said. But Mr Price emphasised that if oil in commercial quantities was found in Taranaki it would be some time before any was sent to Northland. Replying to a question, Mr Price said the oil industry had hot contemplated building another refinery in Taranaki. With Mr Price was the company’s general manager (Mr D S. Watt), who agreed that no set pattern had been made for drilling in Taranaki. Il was possible that another well could be drilled at Tikorangi before Kapuni. even though a start had been made on a second well at Kapuni. Land for the site had been chosen for a second well at Tikorangi, but the position of Taranaki’s next well depended on the results of tests being made at Mangahewa No. 1.
