FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT

Situation.—A deep depression centred just east of Northland on Thursday evening is expected to move south-eastwards to lie east of Gisborne by mid-day: a ridge of high pressure extends on to the South Island from the south-west. Forecast:— Canterbury and Kaikoura coast.—Light or moderate winds, mainly from a southerly Quarter; cloudy and cold, with some occasional showers, chiefly about and north of Banks Peninsula but mainly partly cloudy in the more southern areas. Marlborough Sounds.—South-easterlies strong to gales in exposed areas, slowly moderating later; cloudy and cold, with showers but increasing fair periods later. Central Marlborough and Nelson.—Easterlies strong outside Tasman Bay but decreasing elsewhere: moderate easterly or south-east winds; mainly cloudy; some showers, mainly in more northern and eastern areas; rather cold. West Coast.—Light or moderate winds mainly from an easterly quarter; cloudy at times in Buller, otherwise mainly fine; temperatures cool. Outlook.—All districts: mainly fine but cloud increasing in western areas.
