TOURISM IN JAVA
Mt. Merapi A “Spectacle” (N.Z.P.A.-Rtut«r-Copyright) DJAKARTA, June 8 The Indonesian Government is thinking of turning Central Java’s flaming Mount Merapi into a tourist attraction. In nearly three months of violent eruption the 9009 ft volcano has killed 11 people and forced the evacuation of nearly 40,000. It has destroyed a number of hillside villages and thousands of acres of farming land. A senior official of the Ministry of Tourism. Major Suharto, told reporters today that the Minister. MajorGeneral G. P. H. Djatikusumo. had surveyed the mountain with the idea of billing it as a tourist spectacle. From a distance, the Major said, the killer mountain was a very beautiful sight. The area around the volcano could be described as “the Pompeii of 1961.” and a fee cou’d be collected from sightseers.
