S.I. Association Meets

A turnover of £203,781 for the year ended March 31 was recorded by the South Island Dairy Association, according to the statement of accounts which was adopted by the association’s annual meeting held in ’ Christchurch yesterday. The turnover in Canterbury was £68.637, which was lower than that of Southland (£102,751) and higher than that of Otago < £29,629) and Westland (£2764). The net profit for the year was £4BBO, compared with £4640 the previous year. There had been a marked change in the business of the company during the last 40 years, said the general manager ’(Mr R. A. Greenfield). In 1941, when the turnover was about £40,000, 98 per cent, of the company's business was done with its share, holders. In 1951, when the turnover was about £113,000, 55 per cent, of its business was done with shareholders, 15 per cent, as cash sales, and 30 per cent, with other customers. The business done with shareholders in 1961 was 24 per cent and that done with other customers had grown to 48 per cent. Sales to veterinary clubs amounted to £31,000, representing 15 per cent, of the total sales during the year. In the future there was expected to be an expansion in the town milk supply, said Mr Greenfield. The size of the retail shop was to be doubled, and the trading with veterinary clubs was expected to be higher, especially as a large supply of vaccines was to be available. Stainless steel for the commercial market was also be. ing fabricated. It was hoped that the company would also venture into the domestic market. Messrs A. E. Shieffelbien and J. W. Rainey were reelected as directors, and Mr G. D. McKenzie was elected in place of Mr W. A. Christie, who has retired.
