The Soviet Union emerged today as top contender for titles in Greco-Roman events at the 1961 world amateur wrestling championships. After the first round of matches, they had won seven and drawn one out of eight divisions. The Persians, who won five freestyle titles on Sunday, finished today’s matches with four losses and two byes. Turkey finished strongly with five wins, two losses and one draw. The United States finished with four wins, three losses and one draw. Rumania had two wins, one loss and four draws. Three Australians entered tn the event each lost his opening bout. New Zealand was not represented.
