Visit To City Next Week

Five officers of the United States Army of the Pacific, who are touring New Zealand on exchange with five New Zealand officers now in Hawaii, will arrive in Christchurch on Wednesday. They will call on Brigadier A. H. Andrews, commander of the Southern Military District. and will inspect the United States Navy’s Antarctic advance headquarters at Harewood. Visits to the Canterbury Museum and Botanic Gardens during the afternoon will be made before a call at the Canterbury Officers' Club and a formal dinner at Addington before the party leaves for Bumham Camp. On Thursday the officers will inspect Army units at Burnham and watch the march-in for the annual Army exercise which they will attend during the weekend. They will leave for Dpnedin on June 11. The officers are LieutenantColonel W. W. Hawke. Headquarters, 25th Division (Infantry); Major R. C. Smith. 25th Aviation ■ Company (Armour); Captain L. D. Haney. 4th Cavalry (Armour): Captain J. R. Hinton. 27th Regiment (Infantry); and Captain J. C. M Hoyer. 65th Engineer Battalion. They will be accompanied by Major R. R. Harding. From Dunedin, the party will visit Queenstown, the Hermitage and Lake Tekapo before returning to Christchurch on June 14. Ordnance Officer To Retire The Deputy Assistant-Dir-ector of Ordnance Service for the Southern Military District (Major H. S. Sandford) will retire on June 29 Apart from a year after the Second World War Major Sandford has been with the Army since he enlisted in September, 1939. He served in Greece, Crete, and Libya until he was captured in November. 1941. and was a prisoner in Italy and Germany until 1945. Since the war he has served with the Royal New Zealand Army Ordnance Service spending the last fours years in Christchurch. He will live in Christchurch after he retires.
