CUMBERS AT KATMANDU
“Both Out Of Danger” (NX.P.A-lt enter—Copy rW*O KATMANDU, May 29. Two climbers who contracted pneumonia during Sir Edmund Hillary’a unsuccesstu! expedition to 27,790 ft Mount Makalu were flown to hospital at Katmandu today and pronounced "absolutely out of danger." The men. Sub-Lieutenant Peter Mulgrew, of NeW Zealand. and the London surgeon, Dr. Michael Ward, were lifted by helicopter from Barun Valley to an improvised landing ground elose to the American hospital in Katmandu. Doctors said Dr. Ward, who took over leadership of the expedition when Sir Edmund Hillary had a mild stroke, was "in perfect shape." Sub-Lieutenant Mulgrew. who suffered frostbite and exhaustion as well as pneumonia. is said to be “not in need of any drastic treatment." The doctors added that both men "need a good rest." Dr. Ward said the scientific aims of the expedition—tha study of human reactions at high altitude*—had achieved "complete success."
