ARMY EXERCISE
Officers’ Courses At Burnham
More than 130 officers of the Regular Army up to the rank of major, spent yesterday at Burnham Military Camp studying problems associated with warfare in South-east Asia. It was part of the first phase of “Exercise Waitara.” designed to examine the problems of countering insurgency in an area where New Zealand’s main defence commitments lie. With the aid of a largescale relief model of a typical area in South-east Asia the officers were set various problems. They then formed small groups to try to answer the problems. The emphasis on the first day of the three-day exercise was placed on the problems of administration of an area that would contain welltrained insurgent forces. Allied with this was the question of how best battle forces could be used to cope with the insurgent forces. The exercise, which is held entirely indoors, is under the direction of the Chief of General Staff (Major-General L. W. Thornton). The second phase, a course for senior offices, will be held from June 9 to 11.
