POWER CUT ON PENINSULA

Pole Catches Fire

All Banks Peninsula, from Birdlings Flat eastwards, was without electric power for several hours last evening after the Banks Peninsula Electric Power Board had cut off power in the area. The engineer of the board (Mr R. P. Thomson) said last evening that a board workman had seen a power pole between Birdlings Flat and Little River on fire about 5.20 p.m. Power was cut off in the area about 5 30 p.m. to allow a repair crew to work on the damaged pole, which had about six feet burnt off its top. Mr Thomson said it was thought that the fire was caused by the failure of an insulator Work was going on after 11 p.m.. but it was expected that power would b-> restored by early morning.
