(N Z.P.A .-Reuter—Copyright) CANBERRA. May 29. The Commontweal’Sh Government had decided to intensify ite trade promotion campaign in Britain, the Minister of Trade (Mr J. McEwen) eaid yesterday. The campaign was expected to cost £ 1500 m in 1961 and 1962 The Commonwealth Government and Australian marketing boards would operate a joint promotion eampain costing snore than £600,000. He said that the rest would be spent by Australian snenuDactureru and exporters, their agents and distributors and the retail trade in Britain. Mr McEwen said that trade promotion bad won important gains tor Australian exports to Britain in the last 12 month*. Strong support had been obtained from chain stores, co-operative stores and large voluntary groups of grocers. These three groups now controlled 70 per cent, of total p-ocery sales in Britain. Results achieved so far had emphasised that the development of aggressive selling and trading policies by Australian exporters was essential for the maintenance of existing trade with Britain.
While the Government and marketing boards financed the basic trade promotion programme, the recentlyannounced taxation incentives would enable Australian exporters to increase heavily the promotion of their own brands.
