Doubles Finals
(N.Z. Preu Aien.—Covyright) PARIS. May 28. Roy Emerson and Rod Laver won the men s doubles title in a rainstorm at the French tennis championships in Paris today. They beat the Australians R. Mark and R. Howe, 3-6, 6-1. 6-1. 6-4. Laver later teamed with Darlene Hard (United States) to take the mixed doubles title from Jirf Javorsky and Vera Puzejova 6-0, 2-6. 6-3. The last three sets of the men's doubles were played in continuous rain with all the players slipping and skidding on the red clay as they reached for shots. Mark ricked his neck in the second set trying to return a smash from Emerson and played the rest of the match with his head twisted to one side. Maria Bueno (Brazil) developed jaundice on the last day of the championships and had to scratch from the women’s doubles final. Two doctors were called to the 21-year-old champion’s hotel this morning.
She has been advised to rest in Paris for at least two weeks.
Miss Bueno may not be able to defend the Wimbledon title, which she has held for the last two years. She was to have played with Darlene Hard in the defence of the women's doubles title, but her illness gave the South Africans, Sandra Reynolds and Renee Schuurman. the championship by default.
