The Northern Outlet
Sir,—ln a report of the northern outlet protest meeting in Rangiora ("The Press,” May 24), one statement makes amazing reading. It was claimed by one of the sponsors of the meeting that the 30 miles an hour limit through Belfast was more serious than the congestion on the roads at week-ends. The maximum ‘ time that could be saved on a trip between Rangiora and Christchurch at 50 miles an hour as against 30 miles an hour would be about 15 minutes and the average time saved much less. Are we therefore to spend millions on blazing motorways across good farm land in order that a few impatient people can save a few minutes on a trip to Christchurch? An individual landowner can be compensated for his land, but the production therefrom is lost to the country for ever. And all because the existing highway, the Waimakariri bridge in particular, needs a comparatively small amount of money spent on it. —Yours, etc., A. E. WILLIAMS. Kaiapoi, May 28, 1961.
