STRENGTHENING N.Z. ECONOMY

“Protection Against Loss Of Freedom”

“If we do not train technically to strengthen the economy of all Commonwealth countries, and in particular those members of the Commonwealth less economically advanced than ourselves, I believe we will be engulfed by the overwhelming economic strength of other countries, and our previous gift of freedom will be irretrievably lost.” This was said by Mr J. R. Maddren. past president of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association to parttime students of the Christchurch Technical College at the annual prize-giving ceremony held last evening to mark the beginning of Commonwealth Technical Training week. The ceremony, normally held at the end of the school year, was advanced this year to mark the occaaion. Mr Maddren said that to make a real national impact technical training would be complete. “Basically, everyone should and must be trained to the maximum for whatever job is to be undertaken. Only then will we have maximum efficiency at every level.” he said. ■ Once we achieve this, we will immediately have a stronger nation because our resources are being handled to the best advantage.” Perhaps the great problem which employers would have to face was to train the young to concentrate. This was one of the most important attributes any individual could develop and was the most serious lack in young persons leaving school today.
