(NZT-A -Reuter—Copyright) BRUSSELS, May 29
The European Common Market’s Ministerial Council will open a two-day session today at which it is expected to consider new steps towards faster economic integration of the six members —France, West Germany, Italy, Belgium. Holland and Luxembourg. The council will also have before it a proposal to double the 10 per cent, cuts scheduled on the tariffs among its six members. Under the Rome Treaty creating the Common Market its internal tariffs, already slashed by 30 per cent., are to be cut by 10 per cent next December 31. Now the Common Market Commission, presided over bv Professor Walter Hallstein. of West Germany, is recommending a 20 per cent, cut which would bring the overall dismantling of tariff barriers to 50 per cent at the end of the year. The council is not expected to decide on the commission’s recommendation at this time, but under the treaty ft must make a decision before June 30.
