CITY BUS REVENUE

Improvement Last Month

Increases in all classes of passenger revenue for April were reported to the Christchurch Transport Board yesterday. Mr H. E. Denton claimed that the increases showed that the board was “popularising the buses.” The revenue for 20-ride cards showed an increase of £465 on the takings in April last year, and this, he said, showed that the working people were taking advantage of the concessions granted by the board.

It had been said when those concessions were made that the cash fares would be affected, Mr Denton continued, but cash fares had increased by £7BB last month; and there had been a rise of £lB5 in the revenue from trip cards.

There was a danger in drawing conclusions from “unanalysed* figures, Mr A. J. Woodward said. The figures for cash fares improved by only 27 per cent, while trip cards improved by .96 per cent., and the 20-ride cards by 1.15 per cent Revenue in the four-week period of April increased by £lBO7. and operating expenses rose by £199. The net loss for the period was £248, a drop of £l6OB. Standing charges brought the deficiency to £9821, which was £1834 less than that at the same time last year.
