CANTERBURY TEAM

Match Against English Side

The recall to representative duty of the Wanderers’ wing. P Saunderson. is a feature of the selection of the Canterbury soccer team to meet the touring English side at English Park on Saturday.

The team, announced yesterday by Mr W W. Carruthers, the sole selector, is.— D. Chapman (Old Boys); K. Bendy (Technical), P. Frost (Western); R. Durant (Western). D. Simmonds (Nomads). H. Taylor (Shamrock); A. Verham (Technical). P. Rennell (Nomads), E. Charlton (Technical), T. Havdon (Boys’ High School), P. Saunderson (Wanderers) .

Reserves: D. Smith (Western), M. Shardlow (Western). W. Yates (Shamrock), W. Logan (Technical).

Saunderson played for New Zealand in one test match against the Hong Kong Chinese team in 1957, but has not been selected for Canterbury teams in the last few seasons. Durant and Charlton have also represented New Zealand, and Frost. Simmonds and Rennell have been South Island representatives.

J. Callaghan (Shamrock) is not available as he is a reserve £or the New Zealand team to meet England in Wellington on June 5. and this team will be assembling in Wellington several days earlier for training. This is unfortunate, as Callaghan is now in very good form and should have a chance to play against the English team. H. Verdellan (Shamrock) was not considered because of injury. Players dropped from the Canterbury'side which lost, 4-0. to Otago earlier this season are Yates, W. Rodger (Western), and P. McFarland (Nomads). Verham had not been available tor the earlier match.
