HABITS OF KEAS
Full Investigation Wanted The Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand consider that the kea does not do the amount of damage for which it is blamed. At their annual meeting on Saturday it was decided to ask the animal ecology section of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research as well as the wild life branch of of the Department of Internal Affairs to investigate the kea's habits fully. Mr A. S. D. Evans, of Temuka, said the position should not be reached where the kea had to be put into captivity in an endeavour to keep it from becoming extinct He warned that the kea could reach the same stage as the kakapo on which thousands of pounds had to be spent to save it from extinction. “We seem to have no high country farmers present with us at this meeting.” said the president (Dr. R. A. Rodda). “However. I have been told by several of them that it is only the occasional bird which is a killer.” The meeting unanimously passed the motion calling for the investigation.
