Good Sprint Win For Flying Note

The Southland three-year-old Flying Note made a return to winning form when he outclassed the field in the Final Handicap, a sprint race at Addington on Saturday.

Flying Note was about seventh in the early stages of the race, but began to improve three wide racing to the half-mile. He continued his run in the back straight and followed Medoro Star and Glenoware racing to the home turn, where Tryst, Bespoke. Medium Blue, Dark Signal, Schnapps and Bonnie Lustre were handiest of the others. Flying Note took charge early in the run home and won with a lot in hand by three lengths. Bespoke finished solidly from mid-field to take second place, two lengths in front of Bonnie Lustre, which did not work clear from the rails until the straight entrance. Vanity Scott, which started from 24 yards, finished fast for fourth half a neck behind Bonnie Lustre and a length and a half in front of Tryst. Schnapps ivas a nose back, with a short length to Florita and a neck to Falsehood. Florita. Lauder Scott. O’Dearo and Falsehood broke at the start. Ballista Holds On Ballista took the lead inside the furlong in the Fendalton Handicap and ran on strongly for a decisive win. Ballista received a good run all the way and racing to the straight was close to Lucks Way. a length and a half behind Robin Dundee and Faru. which had been together from the three furlongs. Johnny Dean. Yare. and Young Albion were handiest of the others. Ballista mastered the leaders inside the furlong and came away to win well by two lengths. Robin Dundee raced right up to her best form to hold second place. She began brilliantly and was never far away Yare came home in grand style to take third place a short length back. He was badly placed well back in the field most of the way and had to make a big run over the last three furlongs.

Faru tired to fourth, but was not disgraced. He was half a length in front of Lucks Way, with a length to Meadow Scott, and a length and a half to Johnny Dean. Aerobee and Meadow Scott were slow away. Calumite galloped out at the start and interfered with Lucks Way, Aerobee,' Meadow Seott. Young Kim and Leslie Grattan. Narrow Win Graeme Scott brought his record in New Zealand to two wins and a second from three starts when he held off Dark Lorene by a nose in the Addington Handicap. Graemf Scott broke for a stride or two at the start, but did not lose much ground He was close to the lead aH the way and worked to the front with slightly less than a mile left. He turned for home ahead of Wairau King, which had improved sharply, Dark Lorene, Ahumai, Superway. Court Out and Our Own. Graeme Scott finished on rolidly when hotly challenged by Dark Lorene and he held on to win by a nose. Dark Lorene received a good run through on the inside all the way She trotted a fine race from 48 yards and her placing was full of merit. Ahumai trotted a sound race a>M the way to finish third a length back, with a length to Chances Are. a neck to Wairau King, half a head to Superway, a nose to Court Out and a length to Our Own. At Long Odds Count Cavan, the outsider of the field, upset calculations with a win in the Rapaki Handicap. He was never further back than seventh, but was not far back from the lead. First Song set the pace, turning for home just ahead of Dillon’s Fashion, with a length and a half to Meadow Cheer, a length and a half to Count Cavan, and half a length to Snuffbox. Most of the field began to stop inside the furlong, but

Count Cavan fought on strongly to win by a length. Snuffbox, which broke at the start and covered extra ground to be handy at the mile post, did well to take second place, a length in front of the tiring First Song, which beat Dillon’s Fashion by a nose. Gold Man; was a fair fifth, ahead of Light Comedy, Meadow Cheer, Sand Drift and Local Princess. Whipaway, Nevan, Whipdale, Sand Drift and Chiffon gave ground at the start. Grand Win Flaming Way gave an outstanding display of trotting on a sloppy track when he outclassed his opponents in the Peninsula Handicap. He went to the front before the end of three furlongs, but a furlong and a half later he was steadied behind Mayfair Star. Racing to the three furlongs he went in between Mayfair Star and Robert Medoro and worked into a clear lead soon after. He was followed into the straight by Mayfair Star, Adee, Rest Assured, Spotless and Tracey’s Pal. Flaming Way was not at top in the straight and won with a lot in hand by four lengths. Mayfair Star trotted a sound race for second and was not disgraced when beaten by her brilliant rival. Adee. which broke in the straight and again just short of the post, was a short length back, third, two lengths in front of Spotless. After an inquiry, the third and fourth placings were transposed on the grounds of galloping by Adee. Easy For Guest Star Guest Star made amends for recent failures with a decisive win in the Addington Handicap, a race for probationary drivers. He hesitated at the start, but did not lose much ground before R. P. Nyhan had him pacing cleanly. He pulled hard in about sixth place most of the way and improved sharply inside the two furlongs to follow Storm Water, Deep Lead and Silvester into the straight, with Royal Prince, Latest, Young Conga and Parados following. Guest Star continued his run and soon took control. He finished strongly to win by a length and a half from Latest, which came home strongly from well back in the field. Storm Water tired to third half a length back, two lengths in front of Silvester, with half a length to Deep Lead, a length and a half to No Charge and two lengths to Parados, which was well clear of the remainder. No Charge. Legis, Cheam and Hydro Boy lost ground at the start.
