WEST COAST TOUR

Canterbury Team

The Canterbury Rugby selectors 'Mears P. K. Rhind ' and P. B. Vineent’ have 'chosen a strong team to play i Buller and West Coast at the 'Queen's Birthday week-end. The team is:— Backs: W. F. McCormick • Linwood), D. C. Leary (University), D. J. Davison (University), P. J. Morrissey (Old Boys), S. K. Henderson (Old ißoys), R. D. Hoskin (Uniiversity), J. Hotop (Darfield), B A. Watt (Christchurch), R M. Taiaroa (University). Forward*. T. H. Moynihan (University), P. G. Bark (University), B. R. Smither (University), D. J. Graham (Old Boys), M. R. Dunne (University), A. J. Stewart (University), R. Cochrane (Ellesmere), J. Le Lievre (Hurunui), M. Allen (University), J. N. Creighton (University). The All Black and Lincoln College player, K. R. Tremain. was not available for the tour, but he will play for the Canterbury B team against Mid-Canterbury next Monday. The selection is notable for the absence of the All Black hooker last year, D. Young, and the Canterbury winger, R. M. Smith. This is the first time since Young became a regular member of the representative side that he has been omitted from a Canterbury team. J. N. Creighton, who has been chosen as hooker, deserves his place, however, for he has been in excellent form this season. The inclusion of seven University forwards was not unexpected in view of the outstanding form of the club's pack in recent games. Smither, Bark, and Moynihan have been an impressive loose trio and Smither is equally at home on the flank and at No. 8.

The only new cap is Stewart, a South Canterbury representative last year and one of the most impressive forwards in the competition. His club partner at lock, Dunne, has also won a place in the side, but it is possible that Dunne will play on the flank in one of the games. The front row is a strong one with Le Lievre, who is said to be in fine form in Hurunui, Creighton. and Allen. The three-quarters are fast, with Davison and Morrissey on the wings. Leary, a fullback. is a good utility player as well, and his selection, with that of McCormick, the regular provincial full-back last year, was not unexpected Smith's experience will be missed on the wing. Against Marist on Saturday he showed he still has speed and he could yet regain his place in the representative team
