STIFF ENDURANCE TEST.—In furs and rugs, this sherpa baby in the high Himalayas is more normally clad than the Nepalese pilgrim (left), who some weeks ago astounded scientists with the Hillary expedition when he survived two nights in the open at 17,000 ft. He was barefooted, and he had only a blanket and coat to shelter him from a violent snowstorm and temperatures well below rero. When the weather improved, he posed for this photograph at the place where he “rested out” the storm.
