Kowhitirangi Produces Ton Litter For Second Time
For the second time the West Coast fanning district of Kowhitirangi, which is 15 miles from Hokitika, has produced a ton litter. The distinction is the more notable for it is only the third time that it has been done in New Zealand.
The successful farmer on this occasion is Mr Tom Morrison. a Kowhitirangi dairy fanner who milks about 50 cows. His notable litter of 17 Large White piglets was born on July 2 last year. Two
died soon after birth but the others have thrived well and w’hen the 15 were slaughtered at about five and a half months after birth they turned the scales over at a neat 23151 b. Individual
weights were 1711 b. 1691 b (for two), 1651 b, 1641 b, 1591 b. 1541 b (for two'. 1531 b (for three). 1471 b, 1431 b. 1401 b and 1211 b Mr J. Graha»n, district supervisor for the Canterbury District Pig Committee, said this week that from the stage they weighed about 801 b the pigs were fed on skim milk and Jib of barley meal a day. The 15 pigs are how being held in Christchurch for the Canterbury district bacon competition in August. “This litter just serves to show how pig production by
West Coast dairy farmers has improved over the years," said Mr Graham, “and it will be interesting to see how these pigs measure up in the competition.” Mr Morrison has been a regular competitor in the competition and has often been well placed. His best effort so far has been a third placing, according to Mr Graham. Some years ago Wall Bros., of the same district, had the distinction of producing a ton litter.
