PEOPLE IN THE PLAT

Tw*o of the three Norwood cricket awards for outstanding performances in the 1960-61 Plunket Shield season have been

won by J. R. Reid, the Wellington and New Zealand captain. He won the awards for the fastest century scored in the first innings of a match and the award for the first bowler to take five or more wickets in the first innings of a match. The other award for the fastest half-century in the first innings of a match went to the Wellington batsman. A. H. Preston.

The Technical basketball team’s goal-keeper, Cath. Brown, must be one of the keenest players in the senior competition. To play for her team today, she plans to fly from Nelson this morning. She is an art teacher and last week was teaching in the Nelson district.

D. S. Webb, the 1959 All Black, has returned from overseas and is almost certain to be North Auckland’s hooker this season. Webb has been playing remarkably well but recently received rib injuries in a provincial trial match.

It is pleasing to see the young West Old Girls’ defence. Miriam Islip and Pauline Bennett showing improved form. West’s success in the senior basketball competition last week was largely because of the sound play of these two players. ★ Any indications that P. G. Snell would not recover from a breakdown he suffered earlier in the

year have now completely vanished. Last week-end in training, Snell ran over a 22-mile course in 2 hours 55 minutes, only four minutes behind the marathon champion. B. A. Magee. ★ Mrs Alice Nichol, who has been appointed a Canterbury senior basketball selector, is well known to basketball players. She has had considerable experience. She first started - selecting in the fourth grade and for the last nine ; years has selected the ; senior reserve side. At ’ present Mrs Nichol is a ' member of the Canterbury executive, a regis- ; tration steward and a re- ' feree. She was a Can- ; terbury representative in 1940 and 1941.
