LOCAL BODY POLLS

Legislation Welcomed

Welcoming the proposed legislation announced by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Gotz) and designed to increase interest, Cr. H. P. Smith, jßhe Deputy-Mayor, said yeperday that he believed WpCity Council would examine the legislation with a View to adopting some of it. He thought that anyth.ng that would increase interest was worth having. But he doubted whether it would be practicable to hold elections over a whole week, Cr. Smith said. It would be an improvement to hold them on more than one day, and he thought the position might be met by having an election on a Friday and Saturday. Friday was a day when many women went out to do their shopping, and it would be helpful if they could vote at the same time. “An election spread over a whole week might prove very costly, as well as somewhat tedious, and defeat the purpose of the legislation,” he said. If the idea of a mobile booth meant that it would be a travelling booth moving throughout several areas, and not just the new and outer areas, “then that would really be bringing the booth to the people* Cr. Smith said. He was not so much in favour of a booth which was merely moved from one area to another during the polling times.
