Australia would suffer parallel trade disabilities with New Zealand if Britain joined the European Common Market on the generally prevailing coo&tiona applying to unrestricted trade in agricultural products between members, the Melbourne “Herald" said today. "However, the Australian Government is withholding comment on the effects of British membership, pending disclosure of the terms on which membership is likely to be accepted," the newspaper added. The British Government has repeatedly assured Australia that it does not intend to abandon Commonwealth preferences as a price for membership ot the Common Market.
In Canberra today the Minister for Trade. Mr John McEwen, said that Britain had given Australia “repeated and explicit assurances” that if it was to seek an association with the Common Market, the vital trade interests of Commonwealth countries would be safeguarded. Australia's main concern would be the terms and conditions under which Britain would be allowed to associate with the Common Market, hq, said.
