Death Duties
Sir.—l was most interested in the reply given "R P." by your panel of authors on death duties. Surely they did not expect such a theory which they advanced to be accepted as generally applying. The larger estates and one-man businesses for which they are most concerned will have taken all legal steps to protect their estates before their liability for death duties arises. If they have not made the necessary provision which any prudent person in the above position would take, then the theory of your authors may apply; but its effect would be so small that I am amazed that this should be advanced as a reply to “R P.’s” well-reasoned and factual letter.—Yours, etc., LOGIC. May 26. 1961.
