12 BILLS APPROVED

Government Caucus

(NJZ. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 26. The Government caucus meeting this afternoon discussed the approved 12 bills for presentation to Parliament in the coming session, said the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) at the adjournment. It was the earliest in his memory that such a number had been ready before the session began. He would not name the bills and nobody, he said, would regard them as worldshaking measures but they were important in their spheres. Mr Holyoake said that caucus also discussed licensing and capital punishment and made decisions that would enable the Cabinet to go ahead and draft bills. A review of the defence position by the Minister of Defence (Mr Eyre) came before a discussion on defence in general. Car Imports

The Minister of Overseas Trade (Mr Marshall) gave a resume of the import licensing position generally and more specifically on the question of motor-car imports and future policy in that connexion. "Arising out of that I expect some progress will be made,” said Mr Holyoake, "in alleviating the present shortage of motor-cars.” Mr Holyoake refused to reply to questions as to how additional imports would be financed except to say that it would have to be by overseas earnings plus borrowings. * Mr Holyoake said that Mr Marshall also reported on the revision of customs tariffs and overseas trade.
